Chapter 11 - The Help Julia Chose
Preparing for the hearing forced Julia to read records she had avoided. After Nate died, she made Margaret representative payee for Lily's survivor benefit because she could not face another office. Margaret deposited the checks, paid household bills, and handed Julia grocery cash. Julia never demanded statements. She also let Margaret speak in therapy whenever Lily grew quiet, calling consistency safer than control. One note said Lily checked Margaret before answering about home. Julia saw it and did nothing. Her lawyer was blunt. "Neglect can be passive. Margaret's conduct may be unlawful, but the judge will ask why you surrendered so much." Julia told Lily she had accepted help without asking its cost. Lily asked, "Were you scared of Grandma?" Julia said, "Of failing alone." Lily tapped the table once, not three times. Julia understood it. She could expose Margaret's finances and risk Frank losing the house, or stay quiet and let Margaret's story of necessary care remain believable.
