Chapter 13 - The Choice Without Mercy

Julia could report the misuse, helping her case but risking charges and foreclosure. Or she could seek a civil accounting, protect Frank's home, and let Margaret call mercy proof of exaggeration. Neither choice restored Lily's trust. Frank begged her not to report the account. Margaret didn't. "Your daughter benefited from every dollar." Lily sat beside Sadie in the lawyer's office. "Then why wasn't I allowed to know?" Julia chose disclosure to the federal payee unit and probate judge but requested repayment through sale of Nate's workshop assets before the house was touched. She would not support jail unless investigators found deliberate fraud beyond the records. Her lawyer warned that she could not control the outcome. Accountability was not a dial she could set to spare everyone. Before signing she asked if Margaret should be barred from contact. Lily said, "I want her to stop deciding what my fear means." Julia put that sentence in the proposed visitation plan and signed below it.
