Chapter 7 - Fear Ends Arguments
Frank admitted driving Sadie away before dawn, but not where. Margaret called the service-dog agency in Julia's name and requested surrender. When it demanded evaluation, she ordered Frank to a kennel across state lines. She staged dinner with venison so Lily would believe Sadie dead and never ask again. "Fear ends arguments," Margaret said, like a household rule. Frank did not deny the old rule. Frank claimed he changed the destination, yet refused to name it while Margaret stood there. Julia heard cowardice, not protection. Owen warned of civil claims and lost placements. Margaret laughed once. "Future placements? Julia can't keep a checking account balanced." The insult worked because it held history. Julia had missed bills after Nate's death, and Margaret repaired the damage. Lily tapped the car door three times. Frank answered against his knee. Margaret noticed. Her mouth tightened. Julia understood that Frank's silence was not loyalty to his wife. It was a signal to someone else.
