Chapter 9 - THE STORY IVAN TOLD FIRST

The longer clip began at 3:51 p.m., before any guests arrived near the grill.

Ivan stood by the patio table adjusting folded napkins while Cynthia arranged citronella candles.

Their voices carried clearly.

“She’ll keep this smooth if she knows what’s good for her,” Ivan said.

“And if she doesn’t?”

“Then Mark gets to see what I live with.”

Emily’s throat tightened.

The clip continued.

Cynthia asked, “Did she sign?”

“No.”

“Then after today?”

“After today I won’t need her cooperation the same way.”

Emily looked at Dana.

“What does that mean?”

“Keep listening,” Dana said.

Ivan cracked open another beer.

“Once the board approves everything Monday, she can scream all she wants. I’ll have my title, the equity locked, and a place to land.”

Claire, who had come with Emily, made a sound like she’d been punched.

A place to land.

Emily thought about the unexplained charges she had once seen from a Stamford property-management company on Ivan’s card and dismissed because he traveled for work. She thought about the dry-cleaning receipt in his car with a Fairfield County apartment address scribbled on the back. She thought about how often he’d been “working late” since April.

Dana paused the video.

“Did you know about any apartment?”

Emily shook her head.

The clip resumed.

Cynthia said, “Then don’t let her ruin the afternoon.”

Ivan answered, “She won’t. She knows how to behave when people matter.”

The emotional damage of that sentence arrived before the practical one.

He had not simply been cruel in the moment.

He had been using her in it.

Emily understood then why Ivan’s first fear had been the recording and why Cynthia’s panic had not looked maternal. This wasn’t just proof of violence. It was proof that the barbecue had been part of a strategy.

Emily’s safety mattered.

So did his job.

But behind both sat the deeper truth: Ivan had planned to use her labor, her social skill, and one more polished afternoon in her backyard to secure the future from which he intended to leave her.
