Chapter 7 - THE PATTERN ON THE CAMERA

The backyard camera did not hold dramatic secret confessions or cinematic evidence.

It held something more convincing.

Routine.

Over six months Emily found small clips she would once have ignored:

Ivan taking a delivery and later insisting Emily had forgotten it.

Cynthia visiting on a weekday and remarking, while Emily loaded groceries alone, “No wonder he gets short with you.”

Ivan telling a neighbor, in a joking tone, that Emily “couldn’t handle pressure lately.”

And one clip from the previous Thursday night, after Emily left for Boston.

Cynthia sat at the patio table with Ivan after dinner.

“If she asks questions Monday, remind her it’s your career at stake,” Cynthia said.

“She doesn’t have to be there.”

“Then don’t let her make a scene if she isn’t.”

Ivan rubbed his forehead.

“I’m tired of begging her to support me.”

Cynthia laughed softly. “You’ve never been begging.”

Emily watched that exchange three times.

She realized the camera had not caught one spectacular secret. It had caught how Ivan and Cynthia turned pressure into a language between them. Emily’s resistance was always framed as selfishness; Ivan’s control was always reframed as stress.

Mark Talbot emailed Dana the next morning. Stratton’s general counsel wanted to interview all employees present at the barbecue before the board dinner.

Ivan, apparently, had already told Human Resources that Emily became “physically erratic” after drinking in the heat and that he had merely tried to steady her near the grill.

Dana almost smiled when she read that.

“So now he’s committed.”

“Committed to what?”

“A version.”

Emily knew what came next.

She could keep the matter inside the marriage, use it only for separation or protective relief, and spend years arguing privately over who had done what.

Or she could place the unedited footage where Ivan’s professional version would collide with the truth.

That choice would not be reversible.

Emily went to the bedroom Claire had given her and called Dana back.

“Send the footage to Stratton’s counsel.”
