Chapter 6 - THE COST OF KNOWING

The spousal-consent packet did not give Ivan everything.
It didn’t need to.
What it gave him was a cleaner version of future power.
Emily spent Sunday evening on Claire’s screened porch rereading the printed pages Dana had pulled from the packet. A spouse’s acknowledgment did not waive every marital claim, but it did streamline participation, reduce later disputes, and make the executive look organized and stable before the board.
Stable.
That word followed Emily like a mosquito she couldn’t swat.
For a year Ivan had been calling her “emotional” whenever she objected to something concrete—his mother staying three weeks instead of four days, his habit of volunteering Emily to host work dinners, a missing transfer from their joint account to pay for Cynthia’s kitchen repair.
He said the word with the same tone people used for weather.
“Emily’s been a little unstable since her father died.”
“Emily gets dramatic under pressure.”
“You know how sensitive Emily is.”
Claire, after hearing this, set down her wine and said flatly, “He’s been prewriting your character reference.”
The realization cost Emily more than the near-burn.
It meant she had missed the larger pattern because she kept focusing on individual incidents.
Ivan belittling her at a dinner party when the fish arrived late.
Cynthia telling neighbors Emily “didn’t really work anymore.”
Ivan asking for access to her tax documents the week before his board dinner.
Each incident alone could be minimized.
Together they made a map.
That night Lauren Talbot called.
“Mark already spoke to counsel,” she said. “He also told them I heard Cynthia say, ‘Do your duty as a wife,’ right before the grill incident.”
Emily closed her eyes.
“Thank you.”
Lauren hesitated.
“I need to ask something hard. Are you prepared for what happens if this reaches Stratton formally?”
Emily knew what she meant.
Ivan’s promotion could be suspended. His income could change. Their social circle would turn the story into sport. Cynthia would call it betrayal.
“I’m not prepared,” Emily said. “But I’m not going back without boundaries either.”
Lauren exhaled, relieved by the honesty.
“Then get all your proof together first.”

After the call, Emily reopened the footage archive.
If Ivan had been building a narrative about her stability, there might be more than one afternoon telling the story.
