Chapter 7 - THE PAYMENTS THAT VANISHED

Chris brought the first real proof two days later.
Not stolen records.
Not secret passwords.
Copies of vendor statements he was authorized to access as a co-owner of Mercer Precision.
He slid them across Rachel’s kitchen table.
Emily had left Michael that morning while he was at the shop.
No dramatic confrontation.
No note.
She took one suitcase, her medical folder, the recorder, and her laptop.
By noon, Michael had called thirty-seven times.
By two, Jason had called six.
Chris had called once.
Emily answered his.
The numbers on the statements were simple enough.
Mercer Precision’s internal ledger showed monthly payments to two steel suppliers and an equipment leasing company.
The vendors showed smaller amounts received.
Sometimes nothing.
Yet the money had left the company checking account.
“Who can transfer funds?” Emily asked.
“Jason and Michael.”
“Michael too?”
Chris nodded.
That mattered.
Emily wanted Michael to be manipulated because manipulation was easier to understand than deliberate betrayal.
But Michael had access.
Chris pointed to several dates.
“These transfers happened during days Michael was on the shop floor with me.”
“That doesn’t prove he didn’t authorize them.”
“No.”
Chris looked exhausted.
“I’m not asking you to clear him.”
Good, Emily thought.
Because she wouldn’t.
Another pattern appeared.
Several missing-payment dates matched evenings Michael had come home furious and taken Emily downstairs.
Emily checked her recordings.
On one of those nights, Jason had said, “You fix your wife problem, I’ll fix the bank.”
On another:
“She signs, we breathe.”
A third recording contained Michael saying, “You promised me nobody was going to trace it back here.”
Emily stopped playback.
Chris stared at the laptop.
Neither spoke for several seconds.
Finally Emily said, “What does ‘it’ mean?”
Chris shook his head.
“I don’t know.”
But he looked afraid now.
Not uneasy.
Afraid.
Emily’s phone vibrated.
Michael.
She let it ring.
A text followed.
COME HOME AND WE HANDLE THIS PRIVATELY.
Then another.
IF YOU MAKE THIS PUBLIC YOU’LL DESTROY ALL THREE OF US.
Emily read the last line twice.
All three.
Not our marriage.
Not the business.
All three brothers.
Whatever Jason had done, Michael already knew enough to fear exposure.
May you like
Emily looked at Chris.
“So tell me what you’re still hiding.”
