Chapter 13 - THE MONTHS SHE HAD SAVED IN AUDIO
Emily spent the next week organizing evidence.
Not dramatically.
Chronologically.
Her attorney told her that messy truth became easier to dismiss.
So Emily made it clean.
Dates of prenatal appointments.
Photographs.
Bank notifications.
Messages from Michael.
Copies of the unauthorized loan inquiry.
Medical notes.
The recorder files.
Chris’s statement.
Vendor discrepancies.
The commercial bank records showing transfers into Jason’s company.
She did not edit the audio into a dramatic montage.
She kept complete original files and copies.
On one recording, Michael threatened to keep her downstairs until she agreed to sign.
On another, Jason joked that pregnancy had made her “too slow to run anywhere.”
Chris could be heard telling them to stop.
Then doing nothing.
That part mattered too.
Emily refused to make him look better than he had been.
The financial review produced another useful fact.
The home-equity application had been initiated from Mercer Precision’s office network.
Jason admitted starting it.
He claimed Michael had authorized him to “prepare options.”
Michael admitted he knew Jason was exploring financing but denied authorizing an application in Emily’s name.
For once, their stories no longer protected each other.
The domestic-violence investigation and the financial investigation remained separate processes, moving at different speeds.
Emily liked that.
Reality did not need one perfect villain or one perfect case.
It only needed each person to answer for his own choices.
By late September, Emily had moved from Rachel’s guest room into a small two-bedroom rental nearby.
She took maternity leave earlier than planned.
Michael was allowed communication only through attorneys regarding necessary matters.
The nursery in Emily’s old house remained unfinished.
She could not bring herself to return yet.
One afternoon Chris visited her attorney’s office and added one final fact to his statement.
He had seen Michael remove a secondary release handle from the basement cabinet.
That meant Michael had not merely used an object Jason or Chris created.
He had altered it specifically so Emily could not open it from inside.
Chris had kept the removed handle in his tool chest because Michael told him to throw it away and he had never done it.
The attorney looked at Emily.
That small piece of metal changed the question of intent.
