Chapter 14 - HIS LAST CHANCE

Michael asked to speak with Emily through their attorneys.

Emily agreed only to a structured meeting.

Public office.

Lawyers present.

No private hallway conversation afterward.

She was thirty-seven weeks pregnant.

Michael looked at her belly before he looked at her face.

“Do you know if it’s a boy or girl yet?”

“Yes.”

He waited.

Emily did not tell him.

Something passed across his face.

Loss, perhaps.

Or the first understanding that information about his child was no longer automatically his.

His attorney brought up the release handle.

Michael rubbed his forehead.

“I removed it.”

“Why?” Emily asked.

He stared at the table.

“Because you kept opening the door.”

The simplicity of the answer made Emily colder than any excuse could have.

Michael continued quickly.

“I wasn’t trying to kill you.”

“No one said you were.”

“I never touched the baby.”

“You used the baby.”

He looked up.

“I was scared.”

“So was I.”

“Jason had my name on debt I didn’t even know existed. Mom’s house was tied to the shop. Thirty people could lose their jobs. I thought if we could just get through one month—”

Emily interrupted.

“You locked your pregnant wife in a metal box because your brother stole money.”

Michael’s mouth closed.

His eyes reddened.

For several seconds, he looked like the man Emily had married.

The man who once drove through a snowstorm because she had forgotten her inhaler at work.

The man who spent an entire weekend building shelves for her grandmother.

That man had not disappeared.

That was what made everything harder.

He had simply become a man capable of this too.

“I’ll cooperate against Jason,” he said. “I’ll tell them everything. I’ll go to counseling. I’ll sell my share. Whatever you want.”

Emily looked at him.

“What do you want?”

He answered immediately.

“My family.”

Emily shook her head.

“No. What do you want that doesn’t belong to you?”

Michael stared at her.

He had no answer.

The meeting ended.

Outside, Emily authorized her attorney to move forward with legal separation and to seek strict boundaries around contact after the baby’s birth until safety conditions could be evaluated properly.

She did not demand revenge.

She demanded distance.

By then, Jason’s financial control at Mercer Precision had been removed by agreement among counsel and the remaining ownership while the irregular transfers were reviewed.

Chris was running daily operations.

Michael’s role was limited.

No one knew whether the company would survive intact.

But when Michael left the conference room, he finally understood one thing.

May you like

Emily was no longer deciding whether to expose him.

She already had.
