Chapter 7 - The Plan Had a Medical Vocabulary
The protective-order hearing did not resolve everything.
It was not supposed to.
The judge heard evidence about the assault and extended restrictions while the divorce and parenting case proceeded.
Owen denied trying to remove Mara permanently from the baby.
He described the morning as “an argument that got physical.”
Mara hated the phrase.
As though violence had simply wandered into the hallway by itself.
The court ordered structured parenting exchanges and prohibited Judith from participating in them for the time being.
Then Allison requested relevant communications concerning postpartum care, the packed diaper bag, and plans for the baby during the days surrounding Mara’s delivery.
Owen’s attorney resisted broad requests.
The court allowed a narrower production.
While that process continued, Mara remembered something.
A yellow folder in the kitchen drawer.
Three weeks before delivery, Owen had brought home brochures from a private behavioral-health center.
He told Mara they came from an employee wellness fair.
She had barely looked at them.
One brochure was titled:
POSTPARTUM CRISIS ASSESSMENT.
Mara had thrown it back in the drawer.
Now she asked Claire to retrieve personal belongings from the house under the arrangement allowed by the attorneys.
The brochure was still there.
On the back, in Judith’s handwriting, were three words:
Call before arrival.
Mara stared at them.
Allison remained cautious.
“This still doesn’t prove malicious intent.”
“What would?”
“Context.”
That arrived from someone unexpected but not unrelated.
Mara’s obstetrician called personally after reviewing the records.
“Owen asked our office what would happen if you became acutely unstable after birth,” she said.
“What did you tell him?”
“That true postpartum psychiatric emergencies require professional evaluation. We did not tell him he could simply declare you unfit.”
“Did he ask whether the baby would stay with him?”
A pause.
“Yes.”
Mara closed her eyes.
The language had been medical.
Concern.
Assessment.
Safety.
Stability.

But underneath it, Owen kept asking one question.
What happens to the baby if Mara is taken somewhere else?
