Chapter 14 - Judith's Last Chance to Call It Protection

Judith asked to speak with Mara.
Mara refused twice.
The third request came through Allison.
Judith agreed the lawyers could be present.
She arrived carrying no gifts.
No baby clothes.
No food.
For once she brought nothing that allowed her to perform the role of indispensable grandmother.
“I was wrong,” Judith said.
Mara waited.
“I thought you were trying to separate Owen from his son.”
“I was trying to recover from childbirth.”
“I know that now.”
“You knew I was three days postpartum when you blocked me from my baby.”
Judith looked down.
“I thought you needed help.”
“No. You thought I needed to be removed.”
Judith flinched.
Mara continued.
“Why did you pack the bag?”
“Owen told me he was going to insist you go back to the hospital.”
“Did you expect me to agree?”
Judith did not answer.
“Did you expect him to provoke me?”
“I told him not to fight with you.”
“That isn’t what I asked.”
Judith’s eyes filled.
“I expected you to get angry.”
Mara sat back.
There it was.
“And then?”
“I thought once doctors saw how exhausted you were, they might keep you for observation.”
“They don't hospitalize women because their husbands say they're tired.”
“I understand that now.”
“You didn't need to understand medicine. You needed to understand that I was his mother.”
Judith began crying quietly.
“I was terrified you would take him away.”
Mara looked at her.
“So you tried to take him from me first.”
Judith had no answer.
Mara slid a written boundary across the table.
No unsupervised contact.
No medical calls about Mara or the baby.
No direct interference with parenting exchanges.
No entering Mara's residence without invitation.
Future grandparent contact would depend on consistent respect for those limits.
Judith looked at the page.
“You’re punishing me.”
“No.”
May you like
Mara stood.
“I’m making sure fear never gets to call itself protection again.”
