Chapter 6 - THE SON WHO INHERITED SOMEONE ELSE’S FEAR
Adrian had loved Samuel Cross.
That complicated everything.
Samuel taught him to fish.
Attended every school play.
Paid his tuition.
Sat with him in the hospital after a broken leg.
When Adrian’s father left, Samuel became the steady man in his life.
Now records suggested Samuel had deliberately kept Margaret from Walter.
Adrian resisted the conclusion.
“There has to be context.”
Walter did not push him.
“You're allowed to love him.”
Adrian looked surprised.
Walter continued.
“Doesn't mean he didn't do something wrong.”
The same sentence applied to Evan.
That realization connected the two men.
Both were confronting betrayal from someone they had once protected in their own minds.
Claire Monroe, an elder-law attorney hired for Walter, advised them to separate the issues.
Walter’s financial exploitation was current and documentable.
The old guardianship decisions were historical.
Emotionally linked.
Legally distinct.
Walter agreed.
He filed a formal report regarding the unauthorized transfers from his account.
The bank opened an investigation.
Greenhaven’s corporate owner placed Denise on administrative leave after learning about the payment to her husband’s company.
Denise called Walter personally.
He nearly answered.
Claire stopped him.
“You do not owe her a private conversation.”
Walter looked at the ringing phone.
For years, he had confused politeness with obligation.
He let it stop.
Then another relationship shifted.
Evan called.
“Uncle Walt, this has gotten completely out of hand.”
Walter said nothing.
“I borrowed money. I was going to replace it.”
“You changed my billing address.”
“You weren't managing things.”
“I revoked your authority.”
“You shouldn't have.”
Walter almost laughed.
The entitlement in the answer clarified more than any bank statement.
Evan continued.
“I kept you out of Medicaid placement.”
“You stole sixty thousand dollars.”
“I saved your life from becoming a bureaucratic nightmare.”
Walter looked around Adrian’s guest suite at Greenhaven.
“They put my clothes in a garbage bag.”
“That wasn't supposed to happen.”
Walter froze.
Evan realized the mistake.
“What was supposed to happen?”
Silence.
Walter repeated it.
Evan disconnected.
Walter stared at the phone.
The goal had never been simple theft.
Evan expected something to happen when Walter's payments stopped.
Just not public humiliation.
