Evan discovered Margaret first.
Almost eighteen months before Adrian met Walter.
The revelation came from his computer files after investigators obtained access through the financial case.
Evan had been researching unclaimed property associated with Walter while managing his affairs.
That led him to old guardianship records.
Then to Margaret Cross.
Then to Adrian.

At first, Evan considered telling Walter.

Move him to Maple Creek, where Evan had influence through his business partner.
Continue telling Walter there was no family to contact.

It was Denise’s cruelty layered onto Evan’s financial scheme.

Evan had known Margaret survived.

Walter listened while Claire explained.

Adrian expected rage.

“Did he know she died?”
Claire nodded.
“Yes.”
“When?”
“Before he came asking about the case.”
Walter stood.
His balance wavered.
Adrian reached toward him.
Walter stepped away.
“No.”
He needed to stand alone.
The money no longer mattered.
The nursing-home humiliation barely mattered.
