Chapter 5 - WHAT OLIVER THOUGHT HE CAUSED
Oliver’s court-appointed child specialist learned the rest.
The night of the fire, Oliver had left a space heater plugged into the library.
His father had warned him about it repeatedly.
Afterward, Charles told him:
“If you hadn’t ignored me, none of this might have happened.”
The official fire-origin report had already ruled the heater out.
Oliver did not know that.
For six months, he believed Maria had been careless.
And he believed he had been careless too.
That combination kept him quiet.
The child specialist asked:
“Why did you finally bring the pouch?”
Oliver’s answer was simple.
“Because Maria was going to lose.”
He had overheard Charles telling his attorney that Maria would “finally have to admit what she did.”
Oliver knew the cufflink contradicted his father’s story.
At least in his mind.
He did not understand evidentiary rules.
He understood fairness.
Meanwhile, Erin obtained the smart-home access records.
The archive room had a separate keypad because Charles stored company and family financial records there.
At 6:51 p.m. the night of the fire, the door was opened with Charles’s master code.
Maria never had that code.
At 7:02, the smoke detector in the archive registered particulate.
At 7:08, the full alarm sounded.
Charles’s explanation changed again.
He admitted entering the archive.
He said he retrieved papers and left.
He claimed the door must have remained unlocked afterward.
Erin asked:
“Did you see Maria?”
“No.”
“Did you see Oliver?”
“No.”
“Did you start a fire?”
“Absolutely not.”
The judge still had no basis to decide who did.
But Maria’s position changed.
The claim that she had unrestricted access to the ignition area weakened dramatically.
So did Charles’s credibility.
Then a second hidden truth emerged.
The archive did not contain only business documents.
It held financial records connected to the Rebecca Whitmore Family Trust.
Rebecca, Charles’s wife and Oliver’s mother, had died four years earlier from an aggressive cancer.
She established the trust to fund Oliver’s education, medical care, and long-term security.
Charles served as trustee.
Maria knew almost nothing about it.
But she remembered Rebecca once telling her:
“If anything happens to me, Oliver’s future is protected separately.”
The fire destroyed most of the paper trust files.
Charles had never mentioned that loss in his public account of the fire.
When Erin asked why, his attorneys objected.
