Chapter 1 - THE BOY WHO REFUSED TO SIT DOWN

Charles Whitmore gripped his eight-year-old son by the shoulder and forced him back toward the courtroom bench.

“Sit down. You don’t remember anything.”

Oliver twisted free.

Across the aisle, Maria Torres stood beside her attorney in a simple taupe dress, looking smaller than Charles remembered her.

Exhausted.

Terrified.

Still dignified.

Oliver pointed directly at her.

“She saved me!”

Maria’s eyes filled.

Charles immediately stepped between them.

“He’s confused. Don’t listen to him.”

But Oliver was already reaching inside his navy blazer.

He pulled out a small deep-burgundy velvet pouch.

The edges were blackened.

Burned.

Charles stopped breathing.

Oliver looked at his father.

“Then why did I find this in the fire?”

Maria stared at the pouch.

She had seen it before.

Months earlier, it had belonged to a matching set of silver cufflinks Charles wore almost every day.

Oliver opened it.

A scorched piece of silver glinted inside.

Charles took one involuntary step forward.

“Give me that.”

Oliver backed away.

His fingers covered the engraving.

Then he looked past Charles toward the judge’s empty bench, where court staff were preparing for the afternoon session.

“The person who did it is here.”

Charles’s attorney whispered:

“Charles, don’t say another word.”

That warning came too late.

Maria had already noticed something.

Charles had not asked what the object was.

May you like

He had recognized it before Oliver removed it from the pouch.

And for the first time since the fire destroyed part of the Whitmore estate six months earlier, Maria understood why Charles had worked so hard to make everyone believe she started it.
