Chapter 12 - THE FIRST TIME CHARLES STOPPED DEFENDING HIMSELF

Charles requested a family therapy session.

Oliver’s specialist recommended one limited meeting.

Maria was not present.

This was between father and son.

Charles entered without his usual suit.

Oliver noticed.

“So?”

Charles sat across from him.

“I need to tell you something.”

Oliver’s expression hardened.

The therapist intervened.

“No speeches. Oliver can stop the conversation whenever he wants.”

Charles nodded.

Then he looked at his son.

“I started the fire.”

Oliver stopped moving.

Charles continued.

“I did not mean for it to spread.”

“Why?”

“I was burning papers.”

“Why?”

Charles looked down.

“Because I took money I was not supposed to take.”

“From who?”

“You.”

Oliver’s face changed.

Charles immediately added:

“I put much of it back.”

The therapist said:

“Charles.”

He stopped.

That was a defense.

He understood.

“I took money that Mom had protected for you.”

Oliver stared.

“And you burned her stuff?”

“Yes.”

“Because she knew?”

Charles nodded.

Oliver’s eyes filled.

“Did Maria know?”

“No.”

“Did you tell people she did it?”

Charles could barely answer.

“Yes.”

“Did you tell me my heater did it?”

“I told you it might have contributed.”

Oliver stood.

The therapist asked:

“Do you want to stop?”

Oliver shook his head.

He looked at his father.

“You knew it didn’t.”

Charles’s silence answered first.

“Yes.”

Oliver cried then.

Not loudly.

Not dramatically.

“I didn’t sleep with my heater for six months.”

Charles covered his mouth.

“I’m sorry.”

Oliver backed away.

“No.”

Charles stopped.

Oliver wiped his face.

“Everybody says sorry after they get caught.”

The therapist let the sentence remain.

Then Oliver asked:

“Why did you do all that instead of just losing money?”

Charles looked at his son.

Because his wife had predicted it.

Because his company felt like proof of who he was.

Because failure terrified him.

Because pride became more valuable than safety.

Finally he said:

“I thought losing the company meant losing the life I built.”

Oliver’s voice was small.

“You almost lost me.”

Charles closed his eyes.

May you like

“Yes.”

That was the first answer he gave without trying to make himself sound better.
