Chapter 7 - THE ENGAGEMENT WASN’T PART OF THE ORIGINAL PLANI wanted to believe Veronica became romantically involved with me only to control the secret.
The evidence did not support that.
Reality was less tidy.
For almost a year after Natalie’s death, Veronica and I had no romantic relationship.
She helped with Sofia.
I helped her after her father’s surgery.
We became close because grief rearranged everyone.
When she kissed me for the first time, she pulled away and apologized.
I was the one who kissed her again.
That mattered.
I had chosen her.
Her affection may have been real.
That did not make the deception smaller.
When our relationship became serious, she visited Nora more often.
Why?
Because Mila was asking harder questions.
“Why does Daddy live with Sofia?”
“Why doesn’t he come?”
“Why is Miss Veronica marrying Daddy?”
That last question came after Mila saw an engagement photograph online.
Nora confronted Veronica.
An email survived.
You cannot marry this man while his child thinks he abandoned her.
Veronica replied:
I am working on a solution.
Solution.
Not truth.
She had begun looking at private schools.
Long-term caregiver arrangements.
Trust structures.
Anything except bringing Mila home.
Why?
Because once we were engaged, confession threatened everything.
I might end the relationship.
I might expose her role.
Sofia might learn her mother’s best friend helped conceal her twin.
And Veronica’s entire identity as the woman who “saved” our family after Natalie’s death would become grotesque.
So she tried to solve Mila as a logistical problem.
That was the darkest part.
Not that she hated the child.
She didn’t.
Photographs showed affection.
Birthday gifts.
Medical payments.
She helped Nora with school.

But she loved Mila only inside conditions that protected Veronica.
That is not safe love.
