Not because I traded silence for it.

She told me Mila died.

She knew Natalie intended to tell me.
After Natalie died, she kept Mila’s existence from me.

She maintained contact with Mila.
She helped fund care using Natalie’s trust.
After Nora died, she brought Mila to Atlanta.
She hid her from staff and me.
She placed her in the service room during visits.
She punished Sofia for feeding her.
She planned to move Mila to another caregiver before my scheduled return.
It was devastating because it needed no embellishment.
Then came the line that ended whatever tenderness I still had for her.
The mediator asked:
“Why did you not tell Alexander when Nora died?”
Veronica looked directly at me.
“Because if I told him then, I knew he would never marry me.”
There it was.
Not safety.
Not legal complexity.
Not protecting Natalie’s wishes.
