Chapter 13 - TWO SISTERS LEARNING EACH OTHERSofia thought becoming a sister would happen instantly.

It did not.
For the first month she wanted Mila beside her constantly.
Same pajamas.
Same breakfast.
Same bath toys.
Same bed.
Mila wanted space.
She had lived most of her life as an only child.
Sofia had too.
They fought.
Over stuffed animals.
Over which cup belonged to whom.
Over my lap.
That last one nearly broke me.
One evening, both tried to sit with me during a movie.
Sofia yelled:
“He was my daddy first!”
Mila froze.
The room changed.
Sofia immediately knew she had hurt her.
She began crying.
“I didn’t mean—”
Mila ran upstairs.
I found her inside her closet.
Door open.
Important.
She sat between shoes.
“I can go back to Grandma Nora’s house.”
“No.”
“Sofia had you first.”
I crouched.
“This is not a line.”
She looked up.
“You don’t run out of dad because there are two daughters.”
That was not enough to erase five years.
But it was true.
Later Sofia came in carrying two dinner rolls.
One for herself.
One for Mila.
Children create symbols without trying.
Mila took hers.
They ate quietly on the floor.
That was the beginning.
Not a magical twin bond.
May you like
A relationship.
Built.
