CHAPTER 9

CHAPTER 9

Daniel connected the camera to his phone.

No one moved while the video loaded.

Margaret stood near the cake table, her hands pressed flat at her sides, trying to look offended instead of terrified.

Then her own voice came from Daniel’s phone.

Clear.

Cold.

“You don’t belong in this family.”

A second later, the video showed Margaret grabbing the cake, lifting it, and smashing it into Emily’s dress.

There was no mistake.

No misunderstanding.

No way to polish it into something else.

The room watched Margaret destroy herself in high definition.

One of the older women whispered, “Margaret…”

Daniel stopped the video.

His face was no longer white.

It was calm.

That frightened Margaret more.

“Daniel,” she said, softer now, “you know I only wanted to protect the baby.”

Daniel looked at Emily still seated on the floor, frosting on her dress, one hand over her belly, tears running silently down her face.

Then he looked back at his mother.

“You are never going near my wife again,” he said.

Margaret flinched.

“And you are never going near our child.”

May you like

The room stayed silent.

For the first time in her life, Margaret had no audience left.
