CHAPTER 5
Margaret’s face changed.
Not completely.
Just enough.
The polished smile cracked, and underneath it was something ugly and old.
Emily held the torn papers in her hand.
“I will not sign anything today,” she said.
Margaret looked at the ruined document, then at the guests.
For the first time all afternoon, she seemed afraid of losing control of the room.
“You ungrateful little girl,” Margaret whispered.
Emily stood straighter. “You don’t get to call me that.”
Margaret’s hand tightened around the edge of the cake table.
“You came into this family with nothing.”
Emily’s eyes burned. “I came with your son’s love.”
That was the sentence that did it.
Margaret moved so fast that several guests gasped before Emily understood what was happening.
Her hand clamped onto the white-and-pink cake.
The glass stand scraped against the table.
Emily stepped forward, shocked. “Margaret, stop.”
But Margaret had already lifted the cake.
Her face was twisted with fury.

Then she smashed the cake into Emily’s emerald green dress.
