At first, Emily thought it was a fallen decoration.

Then she saw the lens.

A tiny hidden camera sat beneath the cake table, angled perfectly toward the place where Margaret had attacked her.

Emily stared at it.

Margaret followed her gaze.

Her expression changed so quickly that Daniel noticed.

“What is that?” Daniel asked.

Margaret stepped toward the box. “Nothing.”

Daniel moved faster.

He reached under the table and picked up the tiny black camera. The blue light blinked against his palm.

Every guest leaned in.

Margaret’s lips parted.

Daniel looked at his mother. “Why is there a camera under the cake table?”

Margaret said nothing.

Vanessa stepped forward, pale. “I put it there.”

The room turned toward her.

Margaret’s voice sliced through the air. “Vanessa.”

But Vanessa kept looking at Daniel.

“I’m sorry,” she said. “I heard Aunt Margaret talking yesterday. She said she was going to make Emily look unstable today. She said if Emily reacted badly enough, she could convince you to let her handle the baby.”

Emily’s eyes filled with tears.

Daniel’s jaw clenched.

Vanessa pointed toward the camera. “I didn’t know she’d do that. I just wanted proof.”
