Chapter 9 - DIANE HAD MONEY IN THE DEAL TOODiane was not merely protecting her son.

She had invested $1.2 million in Cross Meridian over six years.

Most came from selling property she inherited from Ryan’s father.

Her retirement was deeply tied to Ryan’s success.

That explained the intensity.

If Meridian South failed, Diane did not become poor.

But a large part of her wealth became vulnerable.

She also lived in a condo Cross Meridian owned.

Below-market rent.

Company-paid maintenance.

Car lease reimbursed as investor-relations expense.

Not necessarily illegal.

Certainly entangled.

Ryan’s success funded her lifestyle.

My refusal threatened the arrangement.

Then we found a series of emails.

Diane to Ryan:

Ava needs to understand marriage is not separate balance sheets when the family is under pressure.

Ryan:

She keeps hiding behind the prenup.

Diane:

Then stop asking like this is optional. She married you.

There it was.

The philosophy beneath everything.

Marriage as consent.

Family as access.

Then another email three days before my birthday:

Get her signature Saturday. She will not embarrass you in front of investors.

I stared at that sentence until my eyes hurt.

There was the party plan.

Not the cake.

Not the bruise.

The signature.

Diane believed public pressure would make me sign.

Why?

Because it had worked before.

At Christmas, I agreed to host forty people after saying no.

At Ryan’s investor dinner, I wore the dress Diane selected after saying I hated it.

At a charity auction, I donated twice what I planned because Diane announced the amount before asking me.

Small things.

Training.

Saturday was the same mechanism with $3.8 million attached.

Ryan’s violence escalated because the pressure system stopped working.

That did not absolve Diane of the humiliation.

It made her role clearer.

She had built the stage.

Ryan chose what to do on it.
