Chapter 13 - THE CONSEQUENCES WERE SMALLER THAN REVENGE AND BIGGER THAN MONEYThe divorce took fourteen months.

The prenup held.

My Ardent Axis proceeds remained mine.

Ryan retained Cross Meridian.

We divided ordinary marital assets.

The house sold because neither of us wanted it.

That surprised people.

“Why wouldn’t you keep it?”

Because houses are not trophies.

I bought a smaller place in Brentwood.

Three bedrooms.

Big windows.

No marble island.

I liked it immediately.

Ryan’s professional consequences accumulated.

Cross Meridian survived.

Meridian South opened nine months late.

Leasing was decent.

The outside fund retained its ownership and governance rights.

Ryan’s share of future profits shrank.

Diane’s distributions shrank too.

Neither became poor.

Good.

I didn’t need poverty to prove harm.

The financial institutions tightened my account security and corrected the unauthorized contact changes.

The custodian covered certain forensic and legal costs because its controls had allowed profile changes without stronger confirmation.

Again:

More than one system failed.

More than one system corrected.

My relationship with Dad changed too.

He stopped asking whether I was “sure” about every decision.

I stopped hearing every question as criticism.

Direct conversation.

Something simple we should have learned years earlier.
