Chapter 7 - THE SECOND SIGNATURE CAME FROM MY MORTGAGE FILEA forensic document examiner confirmed what I already suspected.

The better-looking signature on the transfer authorization was copied from a legitimate document.

Our mortgage refinance two years earlier.

Same tiny hesitation in the A.

Same unusually long horizontal stroke.

Identical enough that natural handwriting would not reproduce it perfectly.

The second signature appeared manually imitated.

The examiner could not say who placed it.

Only that I likely did not.

Then the account-access logs came back.

Someone changed my contact number three weeks earlier.

Login came from the home network.

Using my credentials.

Ryan knew my password?

Yes.

Because I had told him.

Three years earlier, after I had emergency appendectomy surgery, I gave him access to my financial dashboard.

I never changed it.

Another old convenience becoming present vulnerability.

The security email confirming the phone-number change went to an archived folder.

Why?

My email rules had been modified.

Again from the home network.

The evidence did not yet prove Ryan personally clicked the buttons.

But the pattern narrowed.

Then Nicole, the accountant, provided something worse.

An internal Cross Meridian cash-flow model.

Line item:

A. Cross equity contribution — $3.8M.

Date expected:

Monday.

My money had already been incorporated into the company’s financial planning as if it belonged to them.

“How long has that line existed?”

“Five weeks.”

Five weeks.

Before Ryan ever asked me for final approval.

“What did he tell you?”

“That you were committed.”

I closed my eyes.

Another clue.

He wasn’t negotiating with me while telling everyone else negotiations were underway.

He was waiting for my behavior to catch up with the story he had already distributed.

That was the psychological pattern too.

Ryan told Diane:

Ava gets dramatic.

Then my reactions became evidence.

Ryan told investors:

Ava agreed.

Then my hesitation became betrayal.

Ryan told friends:

Ava bruises easily.

Then the bruise became clumsiness.

He created the explanation first.

Reality was expected to conform afterward.

I finally understood why arguing with him exhausted me.

I was always entering conversations after the verdict.
