Chapter 15 - THE NEXT BREAKFAST

Seven months after the chicken-leg incident, Sarah returned to the same galley.

Different evaluation.

Different training group.

Same fluorescent lights.

Same stainless-steel tables.

Same terrible coffee.

She sat alone again.

Not as a trap.

She genuinely wanted breakfast.

Someone dropped into the seat opposite her.

Noah.

Now farther along in training, sharper in posture, still carrying the same observant expression.

“Mind if I sit?”

Sarah looked at him.

“You planning to steal my breakfast?”

“No, Chief.”

“Then sit.”

He did.

A minute later Ethan passed.

Saw them.

Hesitated.

Sarah tilted her head toward the empty chair.

Ethan sat too.

He had changed in obvious ways.

Less need to fill silence.

More attention to where his body was in other people’s space.

He still talked too loudly.

Some things survived personal growth.

Jake arrived last.

He stopped when he saw Sarah.

For half a second, the old breakfast existed between all four of them.

Same room.

Same table arrangement.

No overturned food.

No alarm yet.

Jake held his tray.

“Chief.”

“Thompson.”

He looked at the empty seat beside Ethan.

“Can I?”

Sarah nodded.

Jake sat.

Nobody made a joke.

That almost became awkward.

Then Noah looked at Jake’s breakfast.

“You got two chicken legs?”

Jake stared at him.

Ethan started laughing first.

Jake did too.

Even Sarah smiled.

The joke worked because nobody was trapped inside it.

After a few minutes, a small recruit at the neighboring table stood too quickly and knocked his tray sideways.

A biscuit rolled onto the floor.

The recruit cursed.

Jake automatically bent down.

Picked up the biscuit.

Dropped it into the trash.

Then pushed his own unopened biscuit across the gap.

“Take it.”

The younger recruit looked confused.

“Seriously?”

“Yeah.”

No one praised him.

Sarah deliberately kept eating.

Jake noticed that.

Maybe that was why he smiled.

Not because Sarah approved.

Because he finally understood the action didn’t need an evaluator.

The galley alarm sounded at 06:30.

Routine training.

Everyone rose.

Jake moved with his group.

Noah followed.

Ethan was already calling accountability numbers.

Sarah remained by the table for several seconds, finishing her coffee before joining Control.

Jake glanced back once.

He saw the yellow-and-black patch.

Then Sarah’s face.

For the first time, the patch seemed like the less important thing.

Months earlier he had learned to behave when he knew someone powerful was watching.

Whether he would keep behaving when nobody watched remained the only question that mattered.

Sarah did not know the answer yet.

Neither did Jake.

He turned toward his assignment.

And kept moving.
