Chapter 11 - THE CONSEQUENCE JAKE COULDN’T PERFORM HIS WAY THROUGH
Jake improved immediately.
Too immediately.
Yes, Chief.
No, Chief.
Helping with trays.
Holding doors.
Perfect responses.
The instructors noticed.
So did Sarah.
Then, two weeks later, Sarah was gone for another evaluation assignment.
Jake relaxed.
Not completely.
Enough.
He mocked a recruit who failed a swim assessment.
Stopped when Noah looked over.
Muttered:
“What? You recording me now?”
Noah walked away.
The old Jake wanted confrontation.
The newer Jake noticed himself wanting it.
That was progress of a kind.
Ethan changed faster.
His physical intimidation had scared him once he watched the galley footage.
“I looked like an idiot,” he told Noah.
“You were being an idiot.”
“Thanks.”
Ethan apologized to Sarah formally.
She accepted the apology.
Then asked:
“What specifically are you apologizing for?”
Ethan struggled.
“For grabbing you.”
“Why was that wrong?”
“Because you told us to stop.”
Sarah waited.
Ethan corrected himself.
“Because I had no right to put my hands on you to help Jake humiliate you.”
Better.
Not perfect.
Real.
Jake’s apology went differently.
“I’m sorry this got out of hand.”
Sarah looked at him.
“That describes weather.”
He blinked.
She waited.
Jake tried again.
“I’m sorry you felt disrespected.”
“No.”
His frustration showed.
“What do you want me to say?”
“Nothing.”
That surprised him.
“You don’t owe me a sentence you don’t understand.”
She walked away.
That damaged Jake more than being yelled at.
He could not perform remorse for a passing grade.
Training leadership extended his delay another cycle after a follow-up review found inconsistent conduct.
Jake nearly quit.
He packed half his locker.
Called his father again.
David Thompson listened.
Then asked:
“Do you actually want to be in the Navy?”
Jake stared at the bag.
“Yes.”
“Or do you want to prove they can’t make you leave?”
Jake did not answer.
That question followed him for days.
His original arrogance had been fed by competition.
Strongest.
Loudest.
First.
Best.
Being delayed made everything feel like humiliation.
If he stayed only to defeat the people correcting him, nothing would change.
