Chapter 1 - THE CHICKEN LEG ON THE FLOOR

Sarah Mitchell was halfway through breakfast when Jake Thompson decided she looked like someone he could embarrass.

The galley was crowded with young sailors and recruits finishing breakfast beneath soft fluorescent lights at the training complex outside Great Lakes.

Stainless-steel tables.

Plastic trays.

Coffee too weak to deserve the name.

Sarah sat alone near the end of one table, eating quietly.

Her blonde hair was fixed into a perfect military bun. Her Navy uniform was clean and sharply pressed. On one sleeve sat a small yellow-and-black patch that most people in the room either did not notice or did not understand.

Jake noticed neither the patch nor the fact that Sarah had been watching his table for nearly ten minutes.

He approached carrying his tray with Ethan Carter and two other recruits behind him.

“Mind if we sit with you?”

Sarah kept eating.

Jake grinned.

“Oh, she’s friendly.”

Ethan laughed.

Noah Parker did not.

Noah was the quietest of the group. Tall, lean, observant enough to survive most of Jake’s bad ideas without becoming part of them.

Sarah lifted her coffee.

Jake reached across her tray and picked up the chicken leg.

He took a bite.

Sarah looked at him.

“Put it down.”

Not loud.

Not angry.

Jake heard weakness because he expected weakness.

He tossed the chicken leg onto the floor.

“Pick it up and eat it.”

Ethan laughed harder.

Then grabbed Sarah by both shoulders.

That was the moment Noah finally saw the patch clearly.

Yellow.

Black.

A narrow symbol beneath it he remembered from the orientation packet their training chief had ordered everyone to read.

His stomach dropped.

“Jake,” Noah said.

Jake was still smiling.

Noah grabbed his arm.

“Stop. Right now.”

Jake pulled away.

“What’s wrong with you?”

Sarah calmly removed Ethan’s hands from her shoulders.

She stood.

Perfect posture.

No aggression.

No hurried movement.

Just controlled stillness.

Conversations around them began dying one table at a time.

Jake’s grin faded.

Ethan stopped laughing.

Noah stepped backward.

Then the alarm sounded.

A hard electronic tone blasted through the galley.

Every recruit in the room reacted.

Some stood immediately.

Some looked toward the exits.

A few froze.

Jake looked at Sarah.

For the first time, he seemed genuinely worried.

Sarah looked toward the wall clock.

Exactly 06:42.

Right on schedule.

She hadn’t come to breakfast because she was hungry.

May you like

Breakfast was the first phase of an evaluation.

And Jake had failed before the exercise officially began.
