Chapter 5 - The Videos They Never Meant Him to Find

Martin Hale had been diagnosed with early-onset Alzheimer's three years earlier.
Ryan knew that much.
He knew Vanessa visited Cedar Grove every Tuesday evening. He knew she sometimes came home sitting silently in the driveway before she could make herself walk inside.
He knew she hated discussing money connected to her father.
What he didn't know was that Martin's long-term-care policy had stopped covering the full cost after a dispute over his level of care.
Ryan found that out from Vanessa.
Not willingly.
He sent her the invoice and wrote one sentence.
Tell me what this has to do with Emma.
She called immediately.
“Where did you get that?”
“Shared photo library.”
“You went digging through my things?”
“It synced to our iPad.”
“That doesn't make it yours.”
“No. But Emma is mine to protect.”
Vanessa went silent.
Ryan lowered his voice.
“Tell me the truth.”
“My dad's care has nothing to do with what happened.”
“Then why did you say I didn't understand what was at stake?”
Vanessa exhaled shakily.
“Because you don't.”
The line went dead again.
Ryan didn't call back.
Instead, he continued cataloging the files already visible in the shared account.
The clips established a pattern.
None showed Emma being injured.
That almost seemed to be the rule.
Vanessa and Nicole always stopped short of visible harm.
But distress was the product.
A bottle briefly withheld.
A favorite toy removed.
A loud clap near the edge of the camera frame.
A stranger's Halloween mask held up until Emma cried, then immediately put away.
The damaged pacifiers.
The rapid arm-to-arm transfers.
Each video was short.
Each had alternate takes.
The worst part was hearing the reset between them.
Vanessa's voice would become gentle.
“Okay, okay. Come here.”
She would comfort Emma until the baby settled.
Then Nicole would say something like, “We need one more.”
And the cycle would begin again.
Ryan had to stop after four clips.
He went upstairs and stood beside Emma's crib.
She was asleep on her back, one arm lifted above her head.
For months he'd thought Vanessa was good with her.
That was what made it unbearable.
She was good with her.
Until she decided not to be.
That afternoon Mia Grant came to Claire's house with her mother.
The teenager looked terrified.
“I should've said something.”
Ryan forced himself not to answer too quickly.
“What did you see?”
“Mostly filming.”
“What kind?”
Mia looked toward her mother before continuing.
“Ms. Vanessa would make Emma upset, then hold her after. I thought maybe it was for one of those reaction videos.”
“Why didn't you tell me?”
“I tried once.”
Ryan remembered.
Three weeks earlier, Mia had been standing in his driveway after babysitting.
She had said, “Emma really doesn't like filming days.”
Ryan had laughed and answered, “Neither do I.”
He had assumed Mia meant Vanessa spent too much time recording herself.
Mia stared down at her shoes.
“She said you knew.”
“Vanessa?”
“Nicole.”
Ryan felt something inside him settle into a colder shape.
“What exactly did Nicole say?”
“That you signed off on it.”
Ryan stared at her.
“I didn't.”
Mia's mother touched her daughter's shoulder.
Mia added, “She said you just didn't like seeing the raw takes.”
Ryan wanted to deny it again.
Then he remembered an email Vanessa had sent two months earlier.
Something about releases.
Something about her new management arrangement.
He had opened it while walking into a job-site meeting.
He could no longer remember whether he'd replied.
Claire saw his expression.
“What?”
Ryan stood up.
“I need my work laptop.”
“Why?”
“Because I think I did sign something.”

And suddenly the question wasn't only what Vanessa had hidden from him.
It was what Ryan had agreed to without bothering to understand.
