Chapter 12 - What Each of Them Was Really Protecting

The confrontation happened in Denise Walker's conference room.

Not Ryan's house.

Not Patricia's kitchen.

Not anywhere people could storm upstairs, throw things, or turn private pain into another spectacle.

Vanessa came with her own attorney.

Nicole came with hers.

Ryan nearly objected when he learned Nicole would be there.

Denise advised against it.

“If we're going to resolve control of the content, her company has to participate.”

Nicole entered first.

She looked at Ryan without touching her cheek, though Ryan still remembered exactly where he'd struck her.

Vanessa arrived two minutes later.

She looked thinner.

Nobody hugged.

Nobody offered coffee.

Denise began with the account.

Northline wanted authorization from all contractual managers to remove or demonetize remaining content under their control.

Nicole objected to the wording.

Her attorney spoke for her.

Vanessa stared at the table.

Ryan finally said, “Why are you fighting this?”

Nicole looked at him.

“Because my company has obligations.”

“Your company filmed my daughter being scared.”

“Your wife filmed your daughter. My company distributed content your household approved.”

Vanessa flinched.

Ryan leaned forward.

“You told Mia I approved the raw takes.”

“You wrote that you didn't want to see them.”

“You knew what I meant.”

“No, Ryan. I knew what was useful.”

The bluntness startled everyone.

Nicole folded her hands.

“You think I'm going to pretend this was some innocent little hobby? It wasn't. I had a business that was six months from collapsing. Vanessa had a father she couldn't afford to keep where he was. You had a signature. We had an audience.”

Vanessa looked at her.

“You told me it was safe.”

Nicole turned.

“I told you not to hurt her.”

“You told me crying was fine.”

“Crying is not the same thing as throwing her.”

“We never dropped her.”

Ryan pushed his chair back slightly.

Denise touched his sleeve.

Not to restrain him.

To remind him where he was.

Ryan stayed seated.

Vanessa looked at him.

“That last video was worse than the others.”

“There shouldn't have been others.”

“I know.”

“Stop saying that like knowing now changes what you knew then.”

Vanessa's eyes filled.

“What do you want me to say?”

“The truth.”

“I've told you the truth.”

“No. You've told me what happened.”

Ryan lowered his voice.

“Tell me what you were protecting.”

Vanessa looked away.

For a while nobody spoke.

Then she said, “My father.”

Ryan waited.

“And myself.”

Her voice cracked.

“I couldn't be the woman who married a widower with a baby and immediately became another emergency he had to pay for.”

Ryan stared at her.

Vanessa continued.

“I wanted one thing in my life that wasn't because somebody felt sorry for me.”

“So you let strangers hate you?”

She gave a small, broken laugh.

“That was the part I thought I could control.”

Ryan frowned.

Vanessa wiped beneath one eye.

“People could call me a terrible stepmother. Fine. They didn't know me. The money still cleared.”

She looked at him.

“What I couldn't stand was you looking at me like I was another person who needed saving.”

Ryan felt the accusation because there was truth in it.

Then he looked at Nicole.

“And you?”

Nicole's expression hardened.

“My company.”

“That's it?”

“My company employed three people.”

“Not anymore,” Vanessa said.

Nicole turned sharply.

Vanessa kept going.

“You were going to lose it before you ever involved me.”

Nicole said nothing.

Ryan suddenly understood another piece.

Nicole had needed Vanessa's desperation as much as Vanessa had needed Nicole's plan.

They had each told the other that the next video would solve the problem.

Ryan leaned back.

“And I was protecting the idea that my family was finally okay.”

Nobody answered.

There it was.

Martin's care.

Nicole's company.

Vanessa's pride.

Ryan's rebuilt family.

Four adults protecting something.

Emma had been the only person in the story with nothing to protect except her trust.

Denise slid a set of documents toward the center of the table.

“Then let's decide what happens to the content.”

Nicole didn't reach for them.

Vanessa did.

She read the first page.

Then she looked at her sister.

“If I sign this, Northline can shut everything down.”

Nicole's face tightened.

“It also destroys the only asset my company has left.”

May you like

Vanessa picked up the pen.

For the first time, Ryan saw her choose without looking at Nicole first.
