Chapter 14 - The Last Thing Vanessa Could Still Choose

Vanessa met Ryan one final time before the divorce filing was served.

Claire watched Emma at home.

Denise attended.

So did Vanessa's lawyer.

Nicole was not invited.

They met at a small mediation office in Leawood with beige walls and a coffee machine nobody touched.

Vanessa brought a laptop.

She placed it on the table.

“Nicole keeps a mirrored archive through her company.”

Denise glanced at Vanessa's attorney.

He nodded.

“My client has access because she was listed as a project administrator.”

Vanessa opened the dashboard without bypassing any password protections.

Hundreds of files appeared.

Raw footage.

Edited drafts.

Thumbnails.

Captions.

Ryan felt physically ill.

Vanessa did not look at him.

“I can authorize deletion of anything tied to my profile,” she said. “Northline can use that authorization to request removal from the mirrored storage.”

“And Nicole?”

“She can fight them.”

“Will she?”

Vanessa gave a tired smile.

“Yes.”

Ryan believed her.

Denise asked, “Are there files outside this system?”

Vanessa shook her head.

“Not that I know of.”

Ryan watched her carefully.

“That answer matters.”

“I know.”

“If another archive appears later—”

“I'll tell you.”

He waited.

Vanessa met his eyes.

“I am done protecting this.”

It was not an apology.

Ryan almost preferred that.

Apologies had become too easy.

Denise slid a written declaration across the table.

Vanessa read every page.

Unlike Ryan with the consent release, she did not skim.

She asked two questions.

Then she signed.

The declaration confirmed that certain footage had been produced by deliberately provoking Emma's distress; that Ryan had not observed or approved those methods; and that Vanessa consented to preservation of the raw files for any ongoing reviews while requesting public copies be removed where possible.

Nicole's lawyer had warned that the declaration could damage Nicole's business.

Vanessa signed anyway.

When the paperwork was finished, Ryan closed the laptop.

Vanessa didn't leave.

“Can I ask you something?”

Ryan looked at Denise.

Denise gave him the choice.

Ryan nodded.

Vanessa folded her hands.

“Are you going to tell Dad?”

Ryan hadn't expected that.

“About the videos?”

“Yes.”

“Does he understand much right now?”

“Some days.”

“Then why would I?”

Vanessa looked relieved and ashamed at the same time.

“I don't want the last clear version of me he remembers to be this.”

Ryan thought before answering.

“I won't use your father to punish you.”

Vanessa looked down.

“But I'm not going to lie if I'm asked.”

“I understand.”

Ryan stood.

Vanessa remained seated.

Then she said, “There's one more thing.”

He waited.

“If Nicole goes after you over hitting her, don't use the videos to pretend you didn't do it.”

Ryan's jaw tightened.

For several seconds he wanted to tell her she had no right to lecture him about accountability.

Then he realized that would be exactly the kind of convenient morality he had spent weeks trying to leave behind.

“I won't.”

Vanessa nodded.

“I didn't think you would.”

Ryan picked up his coat.

She looked at him.

“Do you hate me?”

He considered lying.

“No.”

Vanessa's eyes filled.

“That would almost be easier.”

“I don't think easy is available anymore.”

Ryan turned toward the door.

“Ryan.”

He stopped.

“I did love her.”

He knew she meant Emma.

Ryan kept his hand on the door handle.

“I believe you.”

Vanessa began to cry.

Ryan's voice stayed steady.

“That's what makes what you did harder to understand, not easier.”

He opened the door.

Behind him, Vanessa asked the question he had known would eventually come.

“Will I ever be allowed to see her again?”

Ryan did not turn around.

“I don't know.”

It was the first answer he'd given Vanessa in weeks that contained neither anger nor certainty.

And because of that, it was the one she finally seemed to believe.
