Chapter 5 - THE PLAN CLAIRE NEVER MENTIONED

Claire finally sat on the edge of the other bed.
“It wasn’t about taking your house.”
Evelyn remained by the window.
“Then why does every explanation begin with my house?”
Claire rubbed her palms over her jeans.
Last December, after Ryan moved in, he had begun calling her late at night.
Mom forgot the garage door again.
Mom left her pills on the counter.
Mom says Dad is still paying the water bill.
The stories scared Claire because Thomas had handled most of the household paperwork before he died.
Evelyn had needed time to learn the accounts.
Ryan turned that learning curve into evidence.
“He said you were getting worse,” Claire said.
“You visited every Sunday.”
“And every Sunday you were mad at him.”
“I had reasons.”
“I thought you were embarrassed.”
Evelyn looked away.
That hurt because it was partly true.
She had been embarrassed.
Not about losing her mind.
About losing authority inside her own house.
Claire explained that she and Ryan toured an independent-living community in Dublin.
Without Evelyn.
They calculated what the monthly cost would be.
Without Evelyn.
They discussed selling the Westerville house.
Without Evelyn.
Claire had even requested a market estimate from a realtor she knew through work.
“I thought if we had actual numbers, you’d listen.”
“I listened when you spoke to me.”
“You said no every time.”
“That was an answer.”
Claire’s face tightened.
“I was scared.”
“So you made a plan.”
“Yes.”
“With Ryan.”
“Yes.”
The answer hung between them.
Evelyn reached into the cardigan she had worn the day before. Claire had dried it overnight in the hotel laundry room.
From the pocket, Evelyn pulled out the small alarm fob.
“I asked you to come at four-thirty yesterday.”
Claire nodded.
“You said you wanted help changing the security code.”
“I did.”
Ryan had been bypassing the laundry-room sensor at night.
He claimed the old system was glitching.
Evelyn had called the security company herself two weeks earlier.
It was not glitching.
Someone using Ryan’s code had repeatedly bypassed one door sensor, then reactivated it before morning.
Evelyn had scheduled Claire’s visit because she wanted a witness while she removed Ryan’s code.
When Ryan realized why she was holding the security fob, the argument had changed.
He brought out the papers.
Then the basin.
“I didn’t know he’d do that,” Evelyn said. “I thought he’d yell.”
Claire whispered, “Why didn’t you tell me?”
Evelyn looked directly at her.
“Because I wasn’t sure whose side you were on.”
Claire’s eyes filled.
Evelyn did not comfort her.
The hotel phone rang.
Front desk.
A man was downstairs asking for Evelyn Carter.
May you like
Ryan.
And he was telling the clerk he was her legal caregiver.
