Chapter 14 - CLAIRE’S LAST CHANCE TO PROTECT THE FAMILY LIE

Outside the courtroom, Claire sat beside Evelyn on a wooden bench.

Ryan stood thirty feet away with his attorney.

He looked thinner.

Not ruined.

Not transformed.

Just tired.

Claire twisted a tissue between her fingers.

“I can still limit what I say.”

Evelyn looked at her.

Claire continued quickly.

“I don’t mean lie. I mean answer only what they ask.”

“That’s what you should do.”

Claire nodded.

Then she whispered, “Some of those messages make me sound horrible.”

“Some of them were horrible.”

Claire looked down.

“I thought you’d tell me I wasn’t like him.”

“You aren’t.”

Claire looked up.

Evelyn continued.

“That doesn’t make you right.”

The courtroom doors opened.

Before they entered, Ryan crossed the hallway toward them.

His attorney called his name.

Ryan ignored her.

He stopped several feet from Evelyn, careful not to come closer.

“Mom.”

Evelyn said nothing.

“I’ll pay back what I can.”

“That’s between the attorneys and the bank.”

“I’ll stay away from the house.”

“The order can handle that.”

His jaw tightened.

“You really want Claire up there reading those messages?”

Claire stood.

Ryan looked at her.

“I’m your brother.”

“I know.”

“You know what this will do to me.”

Claire’s eyes reddened.

“You knew what that dog run was doing to her.”

Ryan’s face hardened.

“Don’t pretend you weren’t part of this.”

“I was.”

That answer hit him harder than denial would have.

Claire continued.

“That’s why I’m testifying.”

Ryan looked at Evelyn.

“You’re letting her destroy me to save herself.”

Evelyn stood slowly.

“No.”

She adjusted the cuff of her cardigan over the fading marks on her wrist.

“She’s telling the truth even though it hurts her too.”

Ryan’s attorney approached.

“Ryan.”

He backed away.

For one brief second, Evelyn saw the boy who used to sit on the kitchen counter eating cereal while Thomas packed his school lunch.

Then he turned.

The door opened.

Claire offered Evelyn her arm.

Evelyn did not take it.

She walked inside on her own.

Behind her, Claire followed.

The family version of events was over.

The documented one was about to begin.
