Chapter 12 - WHAT EACH OF THEM WAS REALLY PROTECTING

Ryan returned to the Westerville house two weeks later under a scheduled civil standby to collect clothing, business files, and personal belongings.

Evelyn did not need to be there.

She chose to be.

Claire came too.

A sheriff’s deputy remained near the driveway while Ryan carried boxes from the downstairs den.

Nobody shouted.

That made the confrontation worse.

Ryan set a box beside his truck.

“You happy now?”

Evelyn stood on the walkway.

“No.”

“You got what you wanted.”

“I wanted you not to hit me.”

Ryan looked toward the deputy.

“Keep your voice down.”

Claire gave a bitter laugh.

“That’s what you’re worried about?”

Ryan turned on her.

“You don’t get to act clean.”

“I’m not.”

That stopped him.

Claire held his gaze.

“I’m giving them the messages.”

Ryan’s face changed.

“All of them?”

“Yes.”

“You told me to handle it.”

“I told you a lot of things I shouldn’t have.”

“You pushed me every week.”

“I pushed Mom.”

Claire swallowed.

“You assaulted her.”

Ryan kicked at a pebble near the driveway.

For a moment, he looked seventeen.

Then forty-three again.

“I gave up everything for Dad.”

Evelyn stepped closer.

“You helped your father because he was dying.”

“I lost clients.”

“We offered to pay you.”

“You offered gas money.”

“You refused anything more.”

“Because I thought family remembered.”

Evelyn understood then.

Ryan had not wanted wages.

He wanted a debt that could never be fully paid.

“You thought the house was your reward.”

Ryan’s mouth tightened.

“Claire has a career. Mark has retirement. You have this place. What do I have?”

“Choices,” Evelyn said.

He laughed.

“Easy for you.”

“No. Expensive for you.”

He stared at her.

Then his eyes dropped.

“My business was going under.”

“I know.”

“I was going to lose everything.”

“So you chose mine.”

He rubbed his face.

Claire asked, “Did you ever believe Mom actually wanted to move?”

Ryan looked at her.

“No.”

That single word stripped away the last excuse.

Claire’s shoulders lowered.

Evelyn almost wished he had lied.

Ryan picked up another box.

Before turning away, he said, “You both made me the one who had to do the ugly part.”

Evelyn answered quietly.

“No. We made mistakes.”

She looked at Claire.

“You chose violence.”

May you like

Ryan carried the box to his truck.

And none of them pretended anymore that the fight was really about paperwork.
