Chapter 13 - The Evidence They Could No Longer Rearrange

Audrey retained her own attorney.

Over the following week, she corrected the lender record in writing.

She acknowledged that Vivian had never promised continuing financial support.

She identified the transfers she had initiated and explained which statements she had made without Vivian’s authorization.

Her attorney advised her not to speculate, embellish, or attempt to protect Damon.

So she didn’t.

Vivian separately provided medical records documenting the assault and the photographs Margaret had taken.

She also gave police a factual statement.

No dramatic raid followed.

An investigator interviewed Damon days later.

Damon claimed Vivian had provoked him and that the contact had been accidental.

Then Audrey gave her statement.

“He punched her.”

Three words.

No excuse attached.

For Vivian, those words mattered more than any apology Audrey had offered.

The financial issues moved more slowly.

Damon’s company lender suspended further advances while reviewing its exposure.

Audrey and Damon’s mortgage remained delinquent.

Their attorney began discussing a possible sale of the house before foreclosure progressed further.

Damon blamed Audrey for cooperating.

Audrey stopped answering his calls except through counsel when finances were involved.

Then Melissa received one final document from the lending review.

A handwritten note from an earlier meeting between Damon and Colin.

Damon had asked what would happen if Vivian stopped helping.

Colin had written Damon’s response beneath the question.

Audrey says her mother would never let her fail.

Vivian read the sentence without speaking.

It was not evidence of a new crime.

It was something more personal.

Damon had built his confidence on Audrey’s certainty that Vivian would eventually rescue them.

Vivian finally understood the last mechanism keeping the entire arrangement alive.

Everyone had been counting on her inability to watch her daughter suffer.
