Chapter 10 - The Lie Damon Believed
The full picture emerged from records provided during the lender’s internal review.
Damon had known his company was struggling.
He had not known how close his family was to losing their house.
Audrey had intercepted delinquency notices.
She had moved money between accounts.
She had used Vivian’s funds.
And she had repeatedly told both Damon and the lender that Vivian had agreed to provide temporary support.
The three clues now aligned.
The suitcases.
“We’re staying here for a month.”
Audrey taking Vivian’s phone.
Audrey standing beside Damon after he destroyed the camera.
Damon had arrived believing they were finally moving into a house Audrey had told him was available to them.
Vivian’s refusal had sounded to him like a sudden betrayal.
It did not excuse the punch.
It explained the disbelief before it.
Audrey had created two incompatible realities and forced them into the same foyer.
When Vivian confronted her, Audrey didn’t deny it.
“I thought if I could keep everyone calm long enough, I could fix it.”
“You used my money to make Damon think his business was safer than it was.”
“Yes.”
“You used my address.”
“Yes.”
“You told lenders I had promised support.”
“Yes.”
“And when he hit me?”
Audrey covered her mouth.
“I knew if you called the police, everything would come apart.”
Vivian stared at her.
That was why Audrey had taken the phone.
Not because she approved of the violence.
Because she feared what investigation would expose.
Audrey whispered, “I chose the lie over you.”
Vivian had wanted a villain simple enough to hate.
