Chapter 11 - What Truth Couldn’t Repair
Damon learned the truth from Audrey that evening.
He did not take it well.
He called Vivian once.
She didn’t answer.
Then he drove to Audrey’s hotel.
Audrey refused to let him into her room and called hotel security when he wouldn’t leave.
It was the first time she had taken protective action without her mother doing it for her.
The next morning Audrey called Vivian.
“He didn’t hit me.”
Vivian said nothing.
“But I thought he might.”
That sentence changed the conversation.
Audrey moved to another hotel whose location she did not share with Damon.
Melissa helped Vivian document the financial history but reminded her that Audrey needed her own attorney.
“You cannot fix this for her and call it accountability.”
Vivian knew.
She also had to admit something uglier about herself.
For years, she had rewarded Audrey for hiding problems until they looked presentable.
When Audrey failed a college class, Vivian had called a dean.
When Audrey overdrew her account at twenty-six, Vivian replenished it without telling Robert.
When Damon’s first business nearly failed, Vivian helped with the down payment on their house so Audrey would never have to admit how bad things were.
Vivian had meant to give her daughter security.
She had also taught her that consequences could often be postponed if she kept the family image intact.
That realization did not make Vivian responsible for Audrey’s choices.
But it removed the comfort of believing the problem had begun with Damon.
The bank could prove the transfers.
The lender could prove Audrey’s representations.
Vivian could prove Damon assaulted her.
