Chapter 9 - WHEN THE BIRTHDAY REACHED THE OUTSIDE WORLD
The detective’s office was smaller and plainer than Claire expected, which made the conversation feel stripped of drama and impossible to romanticize.
Detective Laura Kim had already reviewed the medical notes, guest statements, and Patricia’s texts to the photographer. She now had a second set of records from Martin Wechsler’s office.
Robert and Patricia had not merely advanced money to Madison.
They had submitted invoices for “grandchild cultural enrichment” that included part of David’s practice-marketing expenses, a family trip to Scottsdale, and a large payment to a firm planning the very birthday party where Lily was hurt.
The trust had been treating Madison’s life as the family’s only approved future.
“Your daughter’s inclusion would have triggered a broader review,” Detective Kim said. “That doesn’t automatically prove motive for the assault. But it strengthens the context.”
Claire understood.
Police could not arrest people for being monstrous.
They needed proof of specific acts and intent.
Then Kim shared something else.
One of the catering assistants had given a statement after hearing raised voices from the upstairs hall. She had been looking for the guest bathroom and paused when she heard Patricia say, “Hold her still. If her face puffs up, she won’t be in the pictures.”
Robert replied, “Do it fast.”
The woman did not walk into the room. She walked away because, in her words, “I didn’t understand what I was hearing until your daughter came downstairs.”
It was not a recording.
It was not perfect.
It was still a witness.
The trust attorney, meanwhile, had notified Eleanor Bennett that a review was pending and that photographs from Madison’s party would not be included in any legacy materials until the matter was resolved.
Patricia immediately blamed Claire for “distressing an old woman.”
Not for hurting Lily. For upsetting Eleanor.
That afternoon, David left a message asking to meet alone.

Then Detective Kim said, “If he’s starting to feel unprotected, he may finally tell you what he was really covering.”
