Chapter 1 - THE GLASS RAISED OVER MY CHILD

Claire Bennett came down the curved staircase with Lily limp in her arms and felt the entire foyer go still around her.

The house in Hinsdale was full of gold balloons, ribbon, and the sugary smell of birthday cake. A photographer stood near the archway. Madison’s pink candles still burned on the table.

Lily’s yellow unicorn dress was wrinkled from sleep. One side of her face was already swelling.

Claire had left her daughter upstairs twenty minutes earlier in the guest room with her stuffed rabbit under one arm and the door cracked open. She came back to find the door shut, Lily whimpering in her sleep, and the left side of her face pressed hot and puffy against the pillow.

At the bottom of the stairs, Robert Bennett raised his champagne glass.

“At last,” he said, laughing, “she’ll look as worthless as she truly is.”

The sound that came out of Claire was not quite a gasp.

It was recognition.

Patricia, standing beside him in a cream silk blouse, did not flinch. She only lifted her chin and looked at Lily’s face with cold satisfaction.

Claire stopped on the final step and tightened her hold on her daughter.

“You attacked a sleeping child for birthday pictures?”

No one answered.

David looked at the floor.

Karen went pale and fixed her eyes on Madison, who had gone quiet beside the cake table.

Patricia’s mouth curved faintly. “Only my real grandchild deserves to shine in this house.”

Claire’s hand shook so badly she almost dropped her phone. She opened the emergency screen and hit 911 while staring at every adult in the foyer.

When the operator answered, Claire gave the address and said, clearly enough to be heard by everyone there, “My parents assaulted my six-year-old daughter.”

Red and blue light had not reached the windows yet, but the room already felt exposed.

Claire looked at Robert, then Patricia.

“Keep smiling for the police.”

At the front door, the brass handle moved.

Robert’s grin vanished first.
