Chapter 8 - Lorraine Had Tried to Inherit Control Before Thomas Was Dead
The disputed document was not a will.
That distinction mattered.
It was a corporate succession consent that would have given Lorraine emergency voting authority over multiple holding companies if Thomas became incapacitated.
The signature looked real.
The witness page looked legitimate.
But Thomas insisted he had never approved it.
A forensic examination performed privately before his death found irregularities in the digital creation history.
The document had been assembled from previously signed pages and later scanned as one file.
Grant stared at Dana.
“Why wasn't anyone prosecuted?”
“Your father refused to pursue criminal accusations without proof of exactly who assembled it.”
“Mom benefited.”
“That is not the same as proving she created it.”
Thomas chose another route.
He revoked the document.
Reorganized the companies.
Removed Lorraine from succession authority.
Separated her support assets from controlling assets.
And amended the trust.
Grant frowned.
“So he never proved she forged anything.”
“No.”
“Then why cut her out?”
“Because estate planning does not require a criminal conviction. He decided he no longer trusted her with control.”
That answer was less dramatic than Grant expected.
It was also far more believable.
Thomas had not needed to decide exactly what Lorraine did.
He needed only to decide what power he was willing to leave her.
He chose very little.
The mansion went to the descendant trust.
Voting interests went into independent management.
Lorraine received financial support but no discretionary control over future family beneficiaries.
Owen’s existence activated the final piece.
That explained Lorraine’s desperation.
Grant asked one more question.
“Did she know Thomas suspected that document?”
“Yes.”
Dana looked uncomfortable.
“She confronted him.”
“What happened?”
“The household manager heard the argument.”
Thomas allegedly told Lorraine:
“You can keep being my wife. You will never again be the person who controls what happens when I cannot speak.”
Grant sat back.
He finally understood why Lorraine spoke of the trust as humiliation.
Thomas had taken away the thing she valued more than money.
Authority.
And then he had arranged for the house she ruled to pass eventually to a grandchild who represented a future she could not control.
Owen had never done anything to her.
