Chapter 7 - Thomas Left Grant a Second Letter
Dana found the second letter in the firm’s archive.
It was addressed only to Grant.
Delivery instruction:
Release after activation of descendant trust or upon material dispute involving Lorraine.
Grant had never seen his father write anything sentimental.
Thomas wrote contracts.
Christmas checks.
Three-word birthday cards.
The letter was seven pages.
Grant read it alone.
Son,
If you are reading this, either you have become a father or your mother has made the trust impossible to ignore.
Probably both.
Grant stopped there.
He could practically hear Thomas’s dry voice.
The letter explained what Thomas regretted.
He had allowed Lorraine to dominate family decisions because arguing with her exhausted everyone.
Thomas called it “buying peace with other people's boundaries.”
Grant had learned the same habit.
As a teenager, if Lorraine disliked Grant’s girlfriend, Grant stopped seeing her.
If she disliked his college plan, he changed it.
If she wanted Christmas at the mansion, everyone came.
Thomas watched.
Rarely intervened.
He regretted that.
Then came the sentence that broke Grant.
If you have a child, do not teach him that love means surrendering whenever the louder person threatens to leave.
Grant read it twice.
Thomas had written the descendant trust not only because of money.
He understood the family pattern.
Lorraine controlled by making disagreement feel like betrayal.
Thomas had spent decades giving in.
Grant had inherited that reflex.
And Thomas feared a future grandchild would inherit it too.
At the end of the letter was another warning.
Lorraine will tell you I punished her because of her brother's investment.
That is incomplete.

Grant called immediately.
“What happened May fourteenth?”
Dana went silent.
“Come in tomorrow.”
“No. Tell me now.”
Another pause.
“Thomas discovered a document authorizing Lorraine as successor manager of several family entities if his medical condition worsened.”
“So?”
“The document appeared to carry his signature.”
Grant felt his chest tighten.
“But he denied signing it.”
“Yes.”
“And May fourteenth?”
“That was the date he discovered it.”
Grant gripped the phone harder.
“What happened after?”
“He removed Lorraine from every succession position.”
There it was.
The money was not why Lorraine lost the inheritance.
