Chapter 11 - The Person Lorraine Had Been Protecting
The answer came from the failed Arizona development.
Lorraine’s younger brother, Martin, had died the previous year from a stroke.
His old business records remained in storage with the bankruptcy trustee.
Dana’s forensic accountant obtained access to relevant estate-related correspondence through proper legal channels.
Buried among hundreds of emails was a chain between Martin and Lorraine.
Most of it was ordinary.
Loan requests.
Family complaints.
Arguments about Thomas refusing additional funding.
Then one message stood out.
Martin wrote:
If T won’t approve emergency authority, use the old execution package. We already have enough pages.
Lorraine replied:
Do not email me about this again.
Grant stared at the screen.
“That’s it?”
Dana nodded.
“It isn't proof she participated.”
“But she knew.”
“Yes.”
A later message from Lorraine was even more important.
I told you no. Fix whatever you did before Thomas sees it.
Grant closed his eyes.
The truth was becoming more complicated.
Lorraine may not have created the false document.
She may have discovered her brother had done it.
And instead of immediately telling Thomas, she tried to make the problem disappear quietly.
Why?
Because exposing Martin would expose the unauthorized loans.
It would reveal that Lorraine had allowed family funds to support his failing development beyond what Thomas approved.
Her silence protected her brother.
And herself.
Thomas eventually found the document anyway.
When he confronted Lorraine, she apparently refused to identify how it had been created.
Thomas interpreted that silence as complicity.
From his perspective, it hardly mattered whether Lorraine physically assembled the pages.
She protected whoever did.
That destroyed trust.
Lorraine’s inheritance rights did not vanish because Thomas suddenly stopped loving her.
They were reduced because he stopped believing she would protect the family assets when loyalty to her brother conflicted with duty.
And now history had repeated itself.
Lorraine had once sacrificed transparency to protect Martin.
Years later she was willing to sacrifice her relationship with Grant—and terrorize Owen—to protect control over what remained.
Different crisis.
Same instinct.
Keep power inside her hands.
Hide whatever threatens it.
Punish anyone who forces the truth into daylight.
Grant finally understood his father’s trust.
