Chapter 9 - The Doctor Evelyn Kept Using

Daniel agreed to meet Detective Benton with his attorney present.

The pills did not come from an old bottle found in a bathroom drawer.

Evelyn had continued obtaining Robert’s discontinued medication for years after his death.

Not through a valid prescription in Robert’s name.

Through a physician named Dr. Calvin Moore, an old friend who once treated Robert.

According to Daniel, Moore occasionally wrote Evelyn prescriptions for sleep medication under her own name.

Evelyn then transferred tablets into Robert’s old bottle because she did not want anyone knowing she used them.

That explanation created a new problem.

If the medication came from Evelyn’s own prescription, investigators could compare pharmacy records and remaining counts.

They did.

Evelyn had filled thirty tablets nine days before Michael’s trip.

Seventeen were missing.

Her attorney said she took them herself.

Medical records did not support that level of use.

Then Daniel admitted something else.

Evelyn had done similar things before.

Not poisoning people.

Sedating Robert.

During his final months, when Robert became agitated over finances or accused Daniel of stealing, Evelyn sometimes put extra medication in his evening drink.

Daniel knew.

He told himself it was caregiving.

“Did Dad know?” Michael asked.

“Sometimes.”

“Did his doctor?”

“No.”

“Did you ever stop her?”

Daniel’s eyes filled.

“Once.”

“When?”

“The night he recorded us.”

That explained the recorder.

Robert had begun keeping audio because he no longer trusted his memory after waking groggy.

He suspected Evelyn was medicating him before financial discussions.

He also suspected Daniel benefited from it.

The recordings became his attempt to create a record when handwriting had become difficult.

Evelyn discovered the recorder after his death but apparently never knew whether copies existed.

She kept it hidden rather than destroy it because, according to Daniel, she feared someone might know it had existed and ask questions if it vanished completely.

Then Lily found it.

Clara found the bank records.

Two old risks converged in one house.

Daniel looked at Michael.

“I helped Mom search.”

“I know.”

“I took Clara’s keys.”

“I know.”

“I believed we could scare her into giving the papers back.”

Michael’s voice hardened.

“She was sick on the floor.”

“I didn’t know Mom was drugging Lily too.”

“You stepped around her.”

Daniel covered his face.

That act could not be explained by ignorance.

He had seen what was happening and chosen the family secret over the child in front of him.

The wider consequence arrived the next morning.

Dr. Moore’s prescribing records were referred to the state medical board.

The old estate issue had become part of a current medical investigation.

And Evelyn’s defense was becoming harder to keep inside the family.
