Chapter 14 - What Evelyn Called Love

Evelyn chose a conference room at her attorney’s office.

She looked smaller than Michael remembered.

Not harmless.

Just older.

“I carried you for nine months,” she began.

Michael almost stood up.

Instead he waited.

“I worked nights when your father’s business struggled. I took care of him when he couldn’t feed himself. Daniel helped. You visited when your calendar allowed.”

“All true.”

The answer unsettled her.

“I am not some monster.”

“I didn’t say you were.”

“You’re letting Clara make me one.”

“No.”

Michael leaned forward.

“I’m letting what you did remain what you did.”

Evelyn’s eyes filled.

“She was going to take everything Daniel built.”

“She was asking where Dad’s money went.”

“She never understood that family.”

“She understood enough to know you were lying.”

“I only wanted her frightened enough to stop.”

Michael felt something cold settle in him.

“And Lily?”

Evelyn looked away.

“She kept eating what wasn’t hers.”

“She was six.”

“The dose was tiny.”

“She was barely conscious when I got home.”

“I didn’t know she would react like that.”

Michael believed that part.

Evelyn had not intended to kill Lily.

She had intended to control Clara with medication and intimidation, then treated Lily’s exposure as acceptable collateral.

Intent mattered.

So did consequence.

“Take the plea,” Michael said.

Evelyn stared at him.

“You want your mother branded a criminal?”

“You already committed the crime.”

“I protected your brother.”

“You protected yourself.”

She shook her head.

“I protected what your father left us.”

Michael thought of Robert’s recording.

Pain gives you ownership.

His father had seen the family’s future more clearly than any of them.

“Dad left us choices,” Michael said. “You made yours.”

Evelyn’s voice dropped.

“If I plead guilty, will I see Lily again someday?”

Michael did not answer for Clara.

He did not answer for Lily.

“That isn’t mine to promise.”

Evelyn looked stricken.

“You’re her father.”

“Yes.”

“That means something.”

“It means I help protect her choices until she’s old enough to make them.”

For the first time, Michael heard how different that sounded from the way his family had always used parenthood.

Evelyn asked for a recess.

The next morning, her attorney called the prosecutor.

She would accept responsibility.

May you like

Not because she suddenly became remorseful.

Because the version of events that protected her had run out of places to hide.
