Chapter 3 - The Recorder That Belonged to a Dead Man

Lily woke the next morning.

Michael sat beside her while she held a hospital blanket beneath her chin.

“Where’s Dolly?”

“With the police.”

Her eyes widened.

“I need her.”

“You’ll get her back when they’re done.”

Lily thought about that.

“Did Grandma take the little thing out?”

“No.”

She relaxed slightly.

Michael asked how the recorder ended up inside the doll.

Lily had found it in Evelyn’s guest-room closet during a Sunday visit in May.

She recognized it because Michael once showed her a photograph of Grandpa Robert using it.

Lily pressed a button.

A man’s voice came through.

Grandpa.

She took the recorder home because she thought Michael would want it.

But before she could show him, Evelyn called looking for it.

“She sounded scary.”

“What did she say?”

“She asked if I had touched her drawers.”

Lily became afraid she had stolen something.

So she hid the recorder inside her rag doll through a loose seam Clara had been meaning to repair.

Later, Clara found Lily listening to it.

She told Lily they should give it to Michael.

Then she heard part of one recording.

Robert Reed’s voice.

Evelyn’s voice.

And Daniel’s.

The conversation was old—possibly from the months before Robert died.

Clara stopped listening because it sounded private.

She planned to tell Michael after his Dallas trip.

Evelyn arrived before she could.

“Did Grandma know you had it?” Michael asked.

Lily nodded slowly.

“She saw me holding Dolly when Mom told her we were going to tell you something.”

That explained the obsession with the toy.

But not the locked pantry.

Not the illness.

Not three days of confinement.

Detective Benton later told Michael that the memory card had been added recently. The voice recorder itself stored older audio internally.

“Any idea what’s on the card?”

“No.”

“Who put it there?”

“I don’t know.”

The answer arrived from Clara.

“I did.”

Michael turned.

Clara explained that after discovering the recorder, she became suspicious.

Not because of whatever Robert recorded.

Because Evelyn had started entering their house when nobody was home.

Their smart lock showed repeated use of Evelyn’s old emergency code.

Michael had never removed it.

Clara bought a cheap indoor camera.

She did not hide it secretly in anyone’s bedroom. She placed it openly in Lily’s room facing the hallway after telling Michael she was worried about Evelyn coming inside.

Michael had said they would deal with it after his trip.

Clara copied clips from the camera to a memory card because she feared Evelyn could access the family cloud account through Michael’s passwords.

Then she hid the card with the recorder.

“What was on the footage?” Benton asked.

Clara looked at Michael.

“Your mother searching our house.”

“For what?”

“The recorder at first.”

She paused.

“Then for bank papers.”

Michael frowned.

“What bank papers?”

Clara whispered:

“Your father left something unfinished before he died.”

And Daniel had apparently spent six years making sure Michael never found out.
