Chapter 4 - The Decision That Cost Alex His Family

The next morning Alex called his mother.

He put the call on speaker at my request.

Evelyn answered on the second ring.

“I hope you’ve calmed down.”

Alex looked at me.

His expression became almost blank.

“Did you hire someone to photograph Maya?”

Evelyn paused.

“I don’t know what you’re talking about.”

“The bank photo.”

Another pause.

Then: “You should be asking your wife why she was there.”

“It’s a bank, Mom. People go there.”

“She was moving money.”

“Her money.”

“You don’t know that.”

Alex closed his eyes.

“What exactly are you accusing her of?”

“You saw the papers.”

“I saw forged papers.”

“You assume they’re forged because she told you they are.”

I watched the muscles in Alex’s jaw tighten.

For years Evelyn had told people Alex was too trusting.

What she really meant was that she expected his trust to belong to her permanently.

“I’m freezing every voluntary payment I make to you,” Alex said.

Evelyn’s breathing changed.

“What?”

“No credit cards. No household transfers. No payments to Chloe. Nothing until the financial review is complete.”

“You cannot do that.”

“It’s my money.”

“I’m your mother.”

“And Maya is my wife.”

There was a silence so complete I could hear our refrigerator cycle on.

Evelyn spoke more quietly.

“She’s carrying your child. That doesn’t make her family more than me.”

Alex flinched.

I saw it.

But he did not retreat.

“You attacked her while she was protecting that child.”

“She pushed me.”

“No, she didn’t.”

“You weren’t there.”

“I recorded you.”

Another silence.

Then Evelyn said something that changed the shape of the entire fight.

“You recorded the end.”

Alex looked at me.

“What does that mean?”

“You didn’t see what happened before.”

“What happened before?”

“She knows.”

I stood.

“No. Say it.”

Evelyn’s voice came sharper.

“You know what you’ve done, Maya.”

“I know you came into my bedroom demanding access to my safe.”

“Our safe.”

Alex cut in.

“No. Mine and Maya’s.”

Evelyn hung up.

An hour later Alex called Bennett Development’s controller and instructed him to turn the internal review over to an outside forensic-accounting firm.

That decision cost him immediately.

His uncle David, another company partner, called furious.

“You’re going to drag the Bennett name through an outside investigation because of a family argument?”

Alex stood in our study looking through the window toward Long Island Sound.

“This stopped being a family argument when fake vendors started billing the company.”

“You don’t know Chloe did that.”

“Exactly. Which is why I want people who don’t care whose last name is Bennett.”

David lowered his voice.

“Think about your mother.”

“I am.”

“Your father spent forty years building this business.”

“And that’s why I’m not burying anything.”

After Alex hung up, he leaned against his desk.

I knew the decision had hurt him.

His father had taught him that family problems stayed inside the family.

But that rule was exactly what had allowed this one to grow.

Two days later the forensic accountant called.

She had found the first connection between MCB Lifestyle Services and Chloe.

The registration fee had been paid with a credit card belonging to Evelyn.
