Chapter 10 - They Never Planned to Steal From the Safe

The major twist arrived in Priya Shah’s office on a rainy Thursday in October.
By then, I was fifteen weeks pregnant.
My bruise had faded.
The fear had not.
Priya placed a diagram on the table.
“The cash in Chloe’s duffel wasn’t intended to be taken from your safe.”
Alex frowned.
“They brought it into the house.”
“Exactly.”
I understood before he did.
“They were going to put it inside.”
Priya nodded.
My stomach turned.
The $31,000 in cash.
The forged acknowledgment.
The fake loan paperwork.
The documents describing money I had supposedly received.
They had not broken into our bedroom to steal evidence.
They had come to plant it.
Alex stared at the diagram.
“But they couldn’t open the safe.”
“Your safe combination was changed six weeks earlier.”
I remembered.
Alex had replaced the keypad battery and reset the code after an attempted service call.
Evelyn knew the old combination.
She did not know the new one.
Suddenly everything from that afternoon changed meaning.
Evelyn did not arrive planning to drag a combination out of me.
She believed she would simply open the safe while I was downstairs.
Chloe brought the duffel.
They intended to place the cash and forged records among our real financial papers.
Then what?
Priya answered that too.
A draft email recovered from Evelyn’s account was scheduled but never sent.
Alex,
I did not want to tell you this without proof. I believe Maya has been taking money from me and hiding it in your home. Chloe and I confronted her because I could not keep covering for her.
There was an attachment listed.
Photographs.
They planned to photograph the planted evidence.
Then tell Alex they had “found” it.
The three earlier clues now fit perfectly.
The photograph of me at the bank created visual support for secret financial activity.
The fake MCB company attached my name to questionable payments.
The forged loan acknowledgments explained where additional cash supposedly came from.
And the repeated questions about my prenup showed the intended endgame.
They wanted Alex to believe his pregnant wife had secretly stolen from his mother and his company.
Why?
Not primarily for money.
Not even primarily to avoid Chloe’s fraud.
Evelyn wanted me out.
Chloe needed me discredited because I was the person who had first questioned the payments supporting her.
The pregnancy accelerated everything.
If Alex and I had a child, Evelyn feared my place in the family would become permanent.
And Chloe feared Alex would restructure his estate and company interests around his own child rather than continuing to rescue his sister.
Their motives were different.
Their plan served both.
Alex got up from the conference table and walked to the window.
For nearly a minute he said nothing.
Then he turned.
“My mother didn’t lose control that day.”
Priya closed the file.
“No.”
I answered for her.
“She lost access to the safe.”
That was why Evelyn attacked me.
The violence was not the plan.
It was the panic that came when the plan encountered a locked door.
May you like
And Chloe’s hammer had not been meant to break into something they wanted to steal.
It had been meant to force open the place where they needed to leave their lie.
