Chapter 1 - The Combination

My mother-in-law had a fistful of my hair when my husband came home.

I didn’t see Alex at first.

My cheek was pressed against the cold white marble beside our bed, and one arm was wrapped around my stomach even though I was only twelve weeks pregnant and barely showing.

“Give me the combination,” Evelyn hissed.

She yanked my hair again.

Pain shot across my scalp and pulled my shoulders off the floor.

“I don’t know what you think—”

“Stop lying.”

Across the bedroom, my sister-in-law Chloe stood beside the open walnut panel that concealed our wall safe. She wore an emerald satin dress and held a claw hammer in both hands.

The safe itself was still locked.

A black duffel bag sat at Chloe’s feet.

“Make her talk, Mom.”

Chloe swung.

The hammer struck the keypad.

Metal cracked against metal.

She recoiled, adjusted her grip, then hit it again.

I twisted away when Evelyn shoved my shoulder toward the floor.

“Stay away from me.”

That was when I saw Alex.

He stood beyond the bedroom doorway in his navy suit.

His phone was raised.

For half a second I thought my mind had invented him.

He had been scheduled to spend the night in Boston after a client dinner. He wasn’t supposed to return to our house in Greenwich until tomorrow afternoon.

Then Chloe saw him too.

The hammer dropped to her side.

Evelyn released my hair.

Alex’s face had changed into something I had never seen before.

Not panic.

Not confusion.

Cold fury.

“Police heard everything,” he said.

Evelyn went pale.

“What?”

Alex walked toward me without lowering his phone.

Chloe looked at the black duffel.

I noticed it because she noticed it.

Then she moved toward it.

“Don’t,” Alex said.

One word.

She stopped.

I dragged myself against the upholstered side of the bed.

Alex crouched beside me.

“Are you bleeding?”

“I don’t think so.”

“The baby?”

“I don’t know.”

His jaw tightened.

From downstairs came the first distant sound of sirens.

Evelyn stared at him.

“You called the police on your mother?”

“I called them while you were dragging my pregnant wife across the floor.”

“She attacked me first.”

I looked at her.

Even Chloe did.

Evelyn’s eyes moved quickly around the room as if she were searching for a version of events she could still control.

Then something white slipped from the partially unzipped duffel bag.

A sheet of paper.

It landed faceup beside Chloe’s shoe.

At the top was my full legal name.

Maya Caroline Bennett.

Under it was a line I could read even from the floor.

ACKNOWLEDGMENT OF RECEIPT — $185,000.

And beneath that was a signature that looked almost exactly like mine.

May you like

Almost.

I had never seen the document before in my life.
