Chapter 7 - The File Her Husband Helped Build

Evan didn’t deny it.

That hurt Claire more than another lie would have.

“My mother said we should keep notes because you seemed overwhelmed.”

“So you documented me?”

“I didn’t write most of that.”

“Did you know she was doing it?”

“Yes.”

Claire stared at him.

Harper played quietly on the rug between them.

“When?”

“After the first couple of monitor alarms.”

“You mean the alarms that may have been caused deliberately.”

“I didn’t know that.”

“But you knew your mother was collecting every scared thing I said.”

Evan’s voice dropped.

“I thought it was temporary.”

“For what?”

He hesitated.

That hesitation answered too much.

“Evan.”

“My mother was worried that if something happened and you refused help, we’d need a record showing there had been concerns.”

Claire felt physically sick.

“We?”

“I never intended to use it.”

“You helped create it.”

“I didn’t understand what she was doing.”

“No. You understood exactly what she told you she was doing. You just decided I wouldn’t find out.”

Evan leaned forward.

“I was scared too.”

“Of me?”

“Of everything falling apart.”

Claire looked at the file again.

That sentence had become the family excuse for cowardice.

Dr. Mercer called later that evening.

The hospital could not definitively identify the metal pieces as coming from Janice’s bracelet without the bracelet itself.

But the material composition was unusual—a decorative magnetic alloy more common in jewelry clasps than household objects.

Then the monitor manufacturer supplied a more useful piece of evidence.

Four interference events occurred while Harper was at Janice’s house.

Each happened shortly after Janice’s administrator account opened the live device-status screen.

One happened while Claire and Evan were both at a wedding in Manhattan.

Janice had been alone with Harper.

The alarm triggered.

Janice called Claire.

Claire remembered the conversation perfectly.

Janice had sounded breathless.

I don’t want to scare you, but something happened again.

Claire had left the wedding crying.

Now she understood why Janice always seemed so composed after Harper’s “episodes.”

Janice had never been surprised.

Claire printed the logs.

Then made a decision.

Janice would no longer babysit Harper.

She would lose access to the monitor.

She would be removed from daycare pickup authorization.

And Claire would not return to the Whitmore family house until she knew exactly what had happened.

Evan stared at her.

“My mother is going to go nuclear.”

May you like

Claire closed the laptop.

“She already did.”
