Chapter 5 - The Bracelet With Missing Pieces

Claire’s sister Megan lived fifteen minutes away in Tarrytown.
By dinner, her dining table had become an evidence station.
Printed monitor logs.
Photographs of blanket hems.
The hospital specimen receipt.
Claire’s texts.
Harper’s medical visit dates.
Megan looked through everything twice.
Then she asked, “What did Janice have on her wrist?”
Claire remembered.
“A bracelet.”
“What kind?”
“Silver. Old-looking.”
Megan opened a photograph from Christmas.
There was Janice beside the tree holding Harper.
Her left wrist was visible.
A wide vintage silver bracelet hung beneath her sleeve.
Seven small crescent-shaped charms circled it.
Claire zoomed in.
Her mouth went dry.
The shape looked almost identical to the metal piece Dr. Mercer found.
She searched newer family photographs.
Thanksgiving.
Seven crescents.
Christmas Eve.
Six.
New Year’s brunch.
Five.
The night of the ER?
Claire had seen only part of the bracelet before Janice covered it.
Megan stared at the progression.
“You think pieces are literally disappearing from her bracelet?”
“I don’t know.”
Claire sent the photographs to Dr. Mercer with a short explanation.
Then she called Evan.
“Ask your mother to show you her bracelet.”
“What?”
“The silver one with the crescents.”
“This is getting ridiculous.”
“Just ask her.”
Evan exhaled.
Twenty minutes later, he called back.
His voice sounded different.
“She says she lost it.”
“When?”
“She doesn’t know.”
Claire closed her eyes.
The next morning Dr. Mercer arranged for the hospital’s materials lab to compare photographs and measurements of the recovered pieces. He warned Claire that visual similarity alone proved nothing.
She understood.
For once, she didn’t want assumptions.
She wanted facts.
Then the monitor company sent the technical logs.
Most alarms were ordinary connection losses.
But a support engineer noticed something unusual.
Several alerts showed an abrupt magnetic interference flag from the nursery base unit.
Claire had never heard of it.
The engineer explained that strong magnetic material placed close to one sensor could disrupt communication and produce an abnormal reading.
Claire immediately thought of the crescents.
Megan whispered, “Were those pieces magnetic?”
Claire didn’t know.
Dr. Mercer did.
He called that afternoon.
Both recovered crescents responded strongly to a magnet.
Claire sat down.
Her skin felt cold.
The object on the X-ray hadn’t been inside Harper.
It had been trapped in her cuff.
The other had been embedded in the blanket fold.
Both were capable of interfering with the nursery system.
And both appeared remarkably similar to pieces missing from Janice’s bracelet.
The hidden truth was beginning to surface.
But it still didn’t explain why a grandmother who claimed to worship her granddaughter would deliberately create alarms around her.
Then Evan sent Claire a screenshot from an old family group chat.

Janice had written something four months earlier.
If Claire keeps panicking like this, someone needs to start documenting it.
